Matanzas for Feb 2020
February 15, 2020 - February 17, 2020
My apologies for the late email. It’s past time to officially announce Matanzas for Feb 2020. The extra course we ran in November has left me a wee bit behind schedule.
So, the course dates are 15-20 Feb. The cost is $750 for the six days or $150/day, three days minimum. A limited number of rooms will be available at the meeting house from the 14th to the 21st. Cost is $750 per room (reserved for full course attendees). If you are booking separate accommodation, it’s best to find something within walking distance of 7th St and 7th Lane, St Augustine Beach or plan to use the public parking on 8th and A1A. There are two hotels very close by, (Best Western and Marriott) and lots of Air B&B possibilities. There are also two very good state park camping locations within a reasonable driving distance. .
Plastic boats are available @ $50/day, composites @ $100/day. I’ll have some demo options available at no cost, but access is shared, so you won’t be able to depend on that as your primary training boat..
This time we’ll be getting back to basics, including intro to surf and rough water, lots of intermediate skills work and for those interested, more advanced surfing and rough water rescue techniques. Our November 2019 session was largely focused on the L-5 IDWs/ICEs but the primary focus this time will be on a broader range of skill sets with most of the coaching conducted by members of the Wave Paddler coaching cooperative (Dale Williams, Tom Noffsinger, Ashley Brown and Jeff Atkins). Laura Zulliger from San Francisco and Levi Hogan from Alaska, both ACA L-5s, will join us for parts of the week as well and we’ll. At this time, only Chris Rezak will be working on his L-5.
February conditions for the last four years have proven to be more usable for a range of skill sets than those we experienced in mid-November (We were week too early from what I hear). Whatever the conditions outside the inlet, there will always be opportunities for strokes, rescues, rolling and current work on the more protected waters of the Tolomotato and Matanzas rivers.
